Marriage is looming for Agnes (Chase Infiniti) in The Testaments.
In season 1, episode 5, Agnes and her fellow Green girls are ushered into a high-stakes ball, where they’re quite literally put on display for Gilead's Commanders, from the powerful elite to those still climbing the ranks. The goal is simple: Secure a husband.
Becka’s (Mattea Conforti) night spirals when a Commander plies her with alcohol, lowering her guard just enough for her to confess something deeply personal — and dangerously illegal — to Daisy (Lucy Halliday).
At the same time, Agnes’ own evening takes an unexpected turn. When her assigned Commander is abruptly called away, her Guardian, Garth (Brad Alexander), is asked to step in on the dance floor — a moment that only deepens her growing feelings for him.
So, what happened in season 1, episode 5 of The Testaments? Here's a breakdown of everything that unfolded.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Testaments season 1, episode 5!
Why were Shunammite and Hulda secretly drinking herbal tea?

While the Green girls are swept up in the spectacle of the ball, the Plums are left behind in the dressing room. Tucked away in a corner, Shunammite (Rowan Blanchard) produces a mason jar of homemade herbal tea — a recipe from her cousin — and begrudgingly shares it with Hulda (Isolde Ardies).
She describes the murky concoction as tasting like “womanhood and mushrooms,” but the goal is clear: Both girls are hoping it will jump-start their periods and make them eligible for marriage.
At the end of episode 5, Hulda rushes into the ballroom and pulls Shunammite aside to whisper, “The tea worked,” before going to inform Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) that she’s become a woman. Shunammite, visibly shaken, fights back tears as she congratulates Hulda.

What does Becka admit to Daisy?

Becka hasn’t eaten in two days, her nerves about the ball leaving her with no appetite. So when a Commander offers her alcohol, it hits her quickly. Feeling dizzy and nauseous, she rushes off, worried she might be sick.
Shunammite spots her stumbling down the hall and urgently tells Daisy to step in before the Aunts notice. Inside the bathroom, Daisy tries to steady Becka, urging her to drink water.
“I don’t wanna go. I don’t want them touching me. I don’t want them looking at me,” Becka tells her, panicked, when Daisy asks if she can pull herself together enough to return to the ball. Then, more quietly, she asks, “What does it feel like to run away?”
Daisy gently shuts the thought down. “Don’t think about that. Think about how much your friends care about you. Agnes — she loves you.”
“Not the way I love her,” Becka replies.
The moment lands with quiet gravity, underscoring the danger in Gilead: Becka’s feelings for Agnes would brand her a “gender traitor” in the regime’s eyes — a label that could cost her everything.
Who does Agnes hope to marry?

Agnes finds herself drawn to her Guardian, Garth — and the feeling appears to be mutual — but in Gilead, a match between them is impossible. However, a flicker of hope emerges when she learns he’s about to be promoted to Commander.
“Garth was becoming a Commander. And if he were a Commander, he would be eligible. And if he became eligible, he could be mine," Agnes says in a voiceover. "All I could think about were his eyes, his touch, his heat. I felt the world was filled with possibility and hope."
What she doesn’t realize is that Garth is secretly a member of Mayday, planted within Gilead to help orchestrate her escape — and play a role in its eventual downfall.
